In the human world, at least, a low voice is generally regarded as a sign of virility. And it seems that this is also true across most of the primate world as well. This, however, may not be the case in terms of howler monkeys. This species is among the loudest on the planet but the bellowing primate with the lowest and loudest howl might belie a bit of betrayal.
According to University of Utah anthropologist Leslie Knapp, âOur study shows that Darwin was probably right when he suggested that the roars of howler monkeys are important for reproduction.â
