30 Surprising Facts about Oscar That Every Football Fan Should Know

Oscar, the current attacking midfielder for Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG and for the Brazil national team, has always had his playing style and ability compared to compatriot Kaká. He is the first player to score a hat-trick in the FIFA U-20 World Cup final. Here are some really surprising facts to know about the Brazilian professional footballer:

  1.  Oscar is an attacking midfielder who has legally acquired silky Brazilian skills and is rarely flashy. He is quick, dynamic, very athletic, and versatile with playmaking abilities.
  2.  He was born on September 09, 1991, in Americana, Brazil, to Suely Alvez and Oscar dos Santos Emboaba. He has twosiblings, Gabriela and Daniela Emboaba.
  3.  He was brought up by a single parent as his father, tragically died of car crash. His mother started selling cloths door to door and in her house to put her children through school.
  4.  He was inducted into youth academy at the age of seven with the club Uniao Barbarians in 1988. Later in 2004, he was spotted by a talent scout and was moved to his native club, Sao Paolo. He made his professional debut on August 28, 2008.
  5.  On August 20, 2011, Brazil won their fifth FIFA U-20 World Cup, when Oscar inspired Brazil to a 3-2 victory over Portugal. He scored all the three goals to become the first player to score a hat-trick in the U-20 World Cup final.
  6.  In September 2011, he made his first senior side debut as substitute in a 0-0 draw with Argentina. He has represented Brazil in all levels of international football from Under-15 level.
  7.  On May 30, 2012, he reached an agreement with his original employers to terminate his contract after paying €6 million and was free to join Internacional. He was involved in legal battle with his the Sao Paulo over unpaid wages dispute.

  10.  On July 25, 2012, Oscar, signed a five year contract with Chelsea for an estimated fee of £25 million and made his debut on August 19, as a substitute in the season opener against Wigan Athletic.
  11.  He was part of Silver medal winning Brazilian squad for the 2012 Summer Olympic in London. He and Neymar were part of all the goals scored in the Olympics and ensured Brazil reached the finals.
  12.  He starred in the opening game of Olympics against Egypt, providing assists for goals by Rafael and Leandro Damiao. He went on to score one against Belarus and once again provided two assists for a 3-0 defeat of South Korea in the semifinals.
  13.  He was in staring eleven for his club Chelsea, for the first time on September 19, 2012 against Juventus in the Champions League, when he helped his team to take lead only to surrender. He was adjusted Man of the Match for his performance.
  14.  Oscar made his fist Premier League start for the Blues in a 1-0 victory over Stoke City, on September 22 and continued his good performance through the season. He opened his Premier League score on December 23 in 8-0 win against Aston Villa.

  16.  On March 25, 2013, he wore his iconic number 10 shirt for the first time in Brazilian colors in a friendly against Russia in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
  17.  In the match against Southampton on January 01, 2014, Oscar had a hand in all the three goals, scoring one and assisted the other two in taking Chelsea home to victory. He was also booked in that match for diving.
  18.  Oscar was part of national team which went on to win the 2013 FIFA Confederation Cup defeating Spain 3-0 in the final. He started in all the game and had hand in the second goal in the final.
  19.  In the humiliating defeat at the hands of Germany in 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Oscar scored the only goal for Brazil, in 7-1 thrashing. He started and played in every game.

  27.  Oscar shocked the footballing world when he left Chelsea, though he had offer from Atletico Madrid and Italy, he chose Shanghai SIPG, for he said ‘China makes offers players can’t refuse.’ I thought more of my family than my career, he added.
  28.  Oscar made his debut for Shanghai SIPG on February 07, 2017 and scored his first goal in a 3-0 win over Thailand club Sukhothai in the 2017 AFC Champions League qualifying play-off.
  29.  On June 18, 2017, he twice kicked the ball into Guangzhou player in frustration after referee overturned his decision in awarding a goal. The game was disturbed following a brawl and he was banned for 8 matches with a fine of 40,000 RMB, for starting the incident.
