Supermoon 2020: How to See It on April
This month, there you will see the largest full moon of the entire year. Some people call it Supermoon 2020 since it will be the largest of the year. Officially, everyone knows this Moon as the Pink Moon. This will be the second time this supermoon appeared when the Worm Moon showed up earlier this March 9. Amateur and experienced astronomers are excited about this April 8. That day is when the Pink Moon will appear, which is this year's largest full Moon.
What is a Supermoon?
The orbit the Moon goes through is elliptical, which means the shape the Moon orbits the Earth is oval. An elliptical orbit means that the Moon will be farther or closer to our planet each night.
If on a particular night, the Moon is at the lowest orbital point from Earth, its perigee, when a full moon is occurring, then the event will have astronomers refer to it as a supermoon.
But the opposite will happen when a full moon occurs while the Moon is at its highest orbital point from Earth, its apogee, which astronomers refer to as a micro moon.
An astronomer from EarthSky, Bruce McClure, said that the full Moon happening this month will be the largest full Moon and the closest to Earth it will be this year.
When will the Supermoon 2020 happen?
What astronomers call the Pink Moon will be at its highest brightness on April 8's early hours of the morning this year. If you anywhere near or residing in the United Kingdom, the Supermoon 2020 will fully lit up thanks to the Sun around 3:35 am British Summer Time on April 8. The time that the Moon will reach its lowest orbit is approximately 7:08 pm British Summer Time on April 7.
The days you will get to witness the spectacular lunar occurrence are in the late hours of April 7 to the early hours of April 8. For three days, the Moon will appear to be fuller than usual to the naked eye while you center onto the full Moon. You should try to witness this year's most prominent full Moon.
It will shine brightly throughout the entire night as it rises from the west after April 7's sunset. Afterward, it will rise higher at midnight. Then finally, it will set in the west before April 8's sunrise. If you are not familiar with astronomy, the reason a full moon is a supermoon is that it is within the perigee by ninety percent.
If you want to know when the next supermoons will appear, they will appear next year on April 27 and May 26.
How To See The Supermoon for Yourself?
You can see the Supermoon 2020 with your naked eyes. You can use a telescope if you want to get a closer look at it. But ensure that you remember to keep social-distancing. The coronavirus is still happening, which means you should stay indoors as much as possible. You can look at it with your family from the safety of your own home, however.
