30 Mind-Blowing Facts About Richard Madden That Will Make You Love Him More

Richard Madden, with his trademark grey streak and most charming smile, has captured the hearts of millions of audiences around the world. With impeccable performances in various roles, he has earned several accolades and critical acclaim over the years. Despite being in the limelight for years, he has managed to keep his personal life private and has even refused to answer questions in various interviews. Here are some interesting facts about the Scottish actor that will make you go crazy for him:

  1.  One of the training aspects for his role as Michael Mason in the 2016 movie “The Take,” was Madden learning how to pickpocket for real, in order to better reflect the character’s cockiness at his ability.
  2.  Madden worked with a consultant named “Keith the Thief,” and learned sleight of hands tricks and distraction techniques. He wanted to do the scenes by himself, and make it seem realistic.
  3.  During the filming of “Cinderella,” the costumes of Prince Kit – the tight pants, usually made Madden’s bulge stick out, due to which the crew had to try various methods to try and hide his genitalia.
  4.  This included Richard trying on several jock straps so that nothing could be seen through the trousers. On one such trail, Richard was trying on one of the straps, which was so tight that he actually teared up in pain.
  5.  In preparation for his role as an international DJ - Leo West in the 2018 movie “Ibiza,” he went to Ibiza and spent a lot of time there to see DJs sets including Fatboy Slim and Pete Tong.
  6.  Richard Madden was born on June 18, 1986 to Richard Madden and Pat Madden in Elderslie, outside the city of Glasgow.
  7.  His father worked as a firefighter, while his mother is a primary school teacher. He has two sisters.
  8.  He was very shy as a kid, and in an effort to overcome the shyness, he joined PACE Youth Theatre, at the age of 11.
  9.  In addition to his shyness, he also struggled with body insecurities, as he was an overweight kid, often subjected to bullying in high school.
  10.  It was around the same age that he was cast in his very first role as Young Andy in the film adaptation of Iain Banks' “Complicity.” His role as Young Andy only added more to the bullying.

  12.  Even through much of his adolescence, he was quite overweight, but decided to shed the extra pounds, when he got a part in a play, which required him to be naked. He realized that he didn’t want to be fat and naked on stage.
  13.  Following “Complicity,” he played the lead role of Sebastian in the children's television series “Barmy Aunt Boomerang,” which aired from 1999 until 2000.
  14.  He attended the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, formerly the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, in Glasgow, graduating in 2007.
  15.  During his studies, he worked with The Arches and the Glasgow Repertory Company, and also performed in Franz Xaver Kroetz's play “Tom Fool” at the Citizens Theatre.
  16.  With the “Tom Fool” production being transferred to London, he was spotted by a team from Shakespeare's Globe, and was subsequently cast as Romeo in the play “Romeo and Juliet” at the modern Globe Theatre.
  17.  He played Callum McGregor in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Malorie Blackman's “Noughts & Crosses,” which ran from December 2007 to February 2008.
  18.  He starred as Robb Stark in the most popular HBO fantasy drama series “Game of Thrones,” based upon the series of novels titled “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R. R. Martin, from 2011 to 2013.
  19.  At that time, Madden was broke and even contemplated moving back with his parents. But, after being cast as Robb Stark in the series, he regained his footing in the industry.
  20.  His performance as Stark, garnered him the much required attention, propelling him to prominence. He also appeared in “Sirens” and “Birdsong.”
  21.  Madden first obtained his Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card for the 2014 miniseries “Klondike,” in which he portrayed Bill Haskell, a real-life adventurer who participated in the Klondike Gold Rush.

  23.  In the entire “Cinderella” movie, his character Prince’s costumes were often accented with shades of blue, in an effort to accentuate Madden’s natural blue eyes.
  24.  Also, in preparation for the role, he had to have his hair chemically straightened and wear extensions throughout the movie, as his hair was relatively short at that time.
  25.  Before the filming of “The Take” movie commenced, he went on to train with a stunt team for nearly six weeks, in several 15-foot high obstacle courses, in preparation for the chase sequences.
  26.  Prior to the filming of the pilot episode of the “Game of Thrones,” he, Alfie Allen, and Kit Harrington tried to one-up each other in their shirtless scene by flexing and doing push-ups right before they went on-camera.
  27.  He was in a romantic relationship with Jenna Coleman for some time, before breaking up with her in 2015. From 2017 to 2019, he was reportedly dating Ellie Bamber.
  28.  On July 4, 2019, Richard received an Honorary Doctorate from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He is now a Doctor of Drama.
  29.  The ballroom dance sequence in the “Cinderella,” he and Lily James had to practice the choreography for months together, to get the steps correct.
  30.  It was very difficult for Madden, as he had to carry the weight of the ball gown and James. He claimed in an interview that in the initial days of practice, the dance was so bad that the dress was tattered and torn apart.
  31.  In the year 2019, he was recognised with the GQ Men of the Year Award for Hugo Boss Most Stylish Man. He was also featured on the Time’s “100 Most Influential People in the World.”
  32.  Madden is also set to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with his role as Ikaris in the “Eternals,” directed by Chloé Zhao, scheduled for a November 2021 release.
