30 Fascinating Facts About Greta Van Fleet You Should Know
Greta Van Fleet, one of the best bands in the world, has been having heads bobbing with their EPs and albums, for the past few years. The band is often compared to Led Zeppelin, with Josh’s voice being compared to Robert Plant’s. In a March 2018 interview, Plant said of Greta Van Fleet, "they are Led Zeppelin I" and described Josh as "a beautiful little singer." Even Jake claimed that he spent a year and "intensely studied" what Jimmy Page, the lead guitarist of Zeppelin did. These youngsters are rocking the world and the millions of fans are taking notice of the emerging band. Here are some really interesting things about the band that every fan should know:
- Their second EP – a double EP, “From the Fires,” won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album at the 61st Grammy Awards, held on February 10, 2019.
- The first single “Highway Tune,” from their debut EP “Black Smoke Rising,” was the first ever song written and recorded together by the band, although it was only released in 2017.
- In fact, the single’s initial guitar riff, was claimed to be written as early back as 2010, which is around two years even before the band was formed.
- The band topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock and Active Rock Stations in September 2017. Billboard magazine noted that Greta Van Fleet was the fastest for a band to top the Mainstream Rock charts with their debut single since Tantric's 2001 single "Breakdown" and 3 Doors Down's 2000 single "Kryptonite.”
- Even before its release, the song "Highway Tune" was featured as a live performance by the band on the Showtime show “Shameless,” on January 17, 2016.
- Greta Van Fleet was formed in the year 2012, by twin brothers – Josh Kiszka and Jake Kiszka, their younger brother Sam Kiszka, and Kyle Hauck, in Frankenmuth, Michigan.
- The band got its name when Hauck heard a relative mention the name of a Frankenmuth resident – Gretna Van Fleet, a musician who played saxophone and piano in the late 50s.
- The group started using a variation of her name, with her blessing. Although the band’s music is not her typical type, she supports the band, and feels they are very talented.
- Hauck, who was the drummer of the band, at that time, was forced to quit from the band in October 2013, after recording only three songs – “Cloud Train,” “Highway Tune,” and “Standing On.” Hauck was replaced by the brother’s good friend Danny Wagner.
- In 2014, their song "Standing On" was featured in 2014 Chevy Equinox advertisements in the Detroit area. It was one of the several songs where were released earlier, but are currently unavailable.
- The other songs in that list are "Down to the River", "By the Riverside", "Thunder Stomp", "Motown Funk No. 4", "Cloud Train", "Occidentalli", "Sing in the Rain", and "Written in Gold."
- The band's debut EP titled “Black Smoke Rising” was released April 21, 2017. While the single “Highway Tune,” topped the rock stations, the second single “Safari Song,” reached number two.
- It was reported that the EP was recorded at Rustbelt Studios, in Royal Oak, Michigan, in just three days, with plans of making “Black Smoke Rising” the first of three EPs.
- Following the release of the EP, the band was named Apple Music’s new artist of the week, on April 21, 2017. The band also won the Best New Artist Award at the Loudwire Music Awards in October 2017.
- An eight-song double EP titled “From the Fires” was released on November 10, 2017, which consisted of the four songs from “Black Smoke Rising” EP and four new tracks.
- The EP also has two covers - a cover of Sam Cooke's 1964 song "A Change Is Gonna Come", and Fairport Convention's 1968 song "Meet on the Ledge."
- Josh and Jake had always wanted to cover "A Change Is Gonna Come," and felt that its political importance was relevant to today and therefore time to finally do it.
- In an effort to give the cover of “A Change Is Gonna Come,” Herschel Boone and his wife recorded multiple chorus parts.
- The two original songs "Edge of Darkness" and "Talk on the Street," were reportedly written about nine months before the release of the EP.
- On September 7, 2017, Greta Van Fleet opened for fellow Michigan native Bob Seger at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan (just minutes from their hometown).
- At the personal request of Elton John, the group performed at John's Academy Award Party on March 4, 2018. John joined the band onstage for his “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting,” and their “You’re the One.”
- Following this performance, John recommended the band to get more dramatic and flamboyant with their onstage performances as well as wardrobe.
- Greta Van Fleet made their TV debut on the July 26, 2018 show of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” in which they performed “When the Curtain Falls,” the first single from their debut album.
- The name of their debut album “Anthem of the Peaceful Army,” was actually taken from a title of the poem. The album went on to become the top selling album in its debut week in the US, selling 80,000 copies.
- The band appeared as the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live,” and performed the song "Black Smoke Rising" and second single from “Anthem of the Peaceful Army,” – "You're the One," on January 19, 2019.
- On December 4, 2020, the band, while announcing their second studio album “The Battle at Garden’s Gate,” released the single “Age of Machine.”
- The album debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on the Top Hard Rock Albums and Top Rock Albums with first week sales of 43,000.
- The first single of the album – “My Way, Soon,” which was released on October 9, 2020, topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in January 2021.
- Daniel Wagner claimed that the second album drew on the band’s touring over the past two years, and how the experience shaped them and opened their eyes.
- Greta Van Fleet contributed the single “Always There,” an outtake from the album, to the soundtrack of the movie “A Million Little Pieces.”
