Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, the most popular Belgian DJ Duo, had millions of clubbers hooked with their music that takes in an array of styles. Their passion for music has led them to achieve the world’s number one DJ position, performing at cities all over Europe. Still, there are many things about the Dimitri Thivaios and Michael Thivaios brothers that even die-hard fans are not aware of. Here are a few interesting facts about the DJ duo that will make you love them more:
- Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike were voted as the world's number one DJ, by DJ Magazine, at the Amsterdam Dance Event 2015, making them the first Belgians to have achieved the feat.
- Their single “Complicated” featuring Kiiara, was certified platinum in both Belgium and The Netherlands in the year 2017.
- The same year they also had a rendition of "He's a Pirate" with Hans Zimmer for the “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” movie, released.
- In November 2016, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike played a "Bringing Germany the Madness" concert, in association with World Club Dome Winter Edition show, at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
- The concert was marked in the German history books following a record-breaking show that saw the brothers play to a crowd of 45,000 people — the biggest solo DJ show in Germany ever.
- Dimitri Thivaios and Michael Thivaios were born on May 16, 1982 and December 3, 1985 in Belgium respectively. They grew up in the Flemish town of Willebroek.
- The Thivaios brothers started making their careers as DJs, at a very young age, and even made several appearances in small clubs.
- The duo were the resident BeatFM radio DJs. However, it was Dimitri who first left Flanders in the year 1999, to tour Europe.
- The elder brother lived in various cities, like Mallorca, Spain and Halkidiki, Greece, before moving to Ibiza, Spain in the year 2003. There, he was a resident in major clubs including Privilege and Space.
- The brothers as Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike released their first single “Liquid Skies,” under the alias DNM in the year 2009.
- The next year, they found their own record label Smash the House, initially distributed by Spinnin' Records for a period of two years.
- In 2010, the brothers were also tasked with the writing of the official anthem for the 2010 edition of Tomorrowland, "Tomorrow (Give in to the Night)."
- Following this, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike continued to write the Tomorrowland anthems up to the 2014 edition.
- In fact, the 2013 edition of the official Tomorrowland anthem “Chattahoochee” peaked at #2 in the Belgian charts.
- "Tomorrow (Give in to the Night)" became their first top 20 hit, peaking at #16 in Belgium and at #5 in the Belgian dance charts.
- With the 16 ranking in the commercial charts, the song remains to be the biggest selling anthem for Tomorrowland to date.
- In collaboration with Dutch DJ Martin Garrix, the duo also released the song “Tremor” in the year. Five years later, Billboard named “Tremor” as their best song.
- The brothers got their first Belgian number one with “The Hum,” in May 2015. The official music video of the song feature Charlie Sheen and Jean-Claude Van Damme.
- This was immediately followed by the release of their most popular song “Higher Place,” featuring Ne-Yo, peaking at #1 in Belgium. Both the songs – “The Hum” and the “Higher Place,” were certified platinum in their home country Belgium.
- The group released their third number one single “Hey Baby” featuring Diplo and Deb’s Daughter. The single was also certified platinum.
- It was with their single “Instagram” about the popular social media app Instagram, released on July 5, 2019, that the DJ duo achieved their first 2× platinum certified single.
- In the year 2017, at the Tomorrowland festival, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike debuted their “Garden of Madness” stage, which has become a part of the event ever since.
- Dimitri & Mike were cast in an acting role in the Belgian movie “Gangsta” directed by Belgian directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.
- The year 2019 was a significant one for the brothers as they reclaimed their place as world's No.1 DJs in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Poll, after being in second place for three consecutive years.
- They played the closing set for the first virtual festival – "Tomorrowland Around the World" held by Tomorrowland, as the usual festival was cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic.
- Dimitri is a big comic book fan, with his favorite being the Spider-Man series. He has a large collection of comic books in his residence.
- On February 15, 2019, the duo, in collaboration with Era Istrefi released "Selfish" which reached the number one position on the Billboard Dance Chart.
- They had in-game characters released based on themselves, in collaboration with the mobile battle royale game "Garena Free Fire" in August 2021.
- The duo released a remixed version of "Hwaa" by (G)I-dle, a South Korean kpop girl group, on February 5, 2021.
