Danville elementary receives fitness center grant

S.C. Tucker Elementary in Danville was recently the recipient of a National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils fitness center. The school was awarded $100,000 worth of equipment through the grant, written by Jenni Phomsithi, and the equipment was installed on Sept. 11, by a team who flew in for the day. The day started with covering the old hardwood flooring with rubber sports flooring and ended nine hours later when the last team member put the last tack in one of several posters about exercise and nutrition.

Don Payne, equipment director for the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils and director of school programs at TuffStuff, led the installation team. 38 pieces of equipment were placed in the 1,500 square foot center including chest and shoulder press machines, upright bikes, Xbox Kinects and games and more.
