WTA Tokyo: Day Three Recap - VAVEL.com

All four singles second round matches in the top half were played on Wednesday at the Toray Pan Pacific Open. Among those in action were four top 15 players, including the number one this week in Tokyo, Caroline Wozniacki.

First up on Center Court - officially called Ariake Coliseum - was the world number nine, Garbiñe Muguruza, who was up against unseeded Czech Barbora Strycova. The Spaniard, who is enjoying the best season of her career so far and made the final of Wimbledon just a few months ago, emerged as a winner in a two relatively tight sets 6-3, 6-4. Strycova showed some fight especially at the end of the second set, when she earned multiple break point opportunities while Muguruza was serving for the match at 5-4. Eventually, the Spaniard came through that service game to advance into the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year, having reached the semifinals here last year.
