The Arab word Yabal means hill and the Greek word Faruh means lighthouse. The name Gibralfaro means lighthouse hill. The hill that overlooks Malaga has a castle with the name of Gibralfaro. In 1296 Malaga belonged to the Nazari Dynasty of Granada. Yusuf I reigned between 1333 and 1354 and he was the one who had the Castle of Gibralfaro built.
