‘Factory Man’ furniture exec talks about taking on China

John D. Bassett III, chairman of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture, had finally tracked down the factory in Dalian, China, producing the Louis-Philippe dresser, the one he knew they were selling in the United States below cost.

And when he met the manager, the man looked him right in the eye and offered him a deal: He’d sell him the dressers at a fraction of what they cost to make. All Bassett had to do was close his own furniture factories in Virginia and North Carolina.
