Their analyses revealed a steep decline in nearly all lion populations in West-Central Africa and a 67% chance that the region’s lion population will decline by 50% over the next 20 years, the researchers report online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Luke Hunter, president of the wild-cat conservation organization Panthera and one of the authors of the study said.
