Asked whether he thought George Osborne had made a huge political mistake, Chris Grayling, leader of the House of Commons, said: "George Osborne took a tough decision. You cannot deal with the biggest deficit in our peacetime history without taking some tough decisions.

"You do have to take difficult decisions to eliminate a deficit. Do you really want a government that looks at tough decisions and says we can't take them and shies away from them?"
