Maria Sharapova won the WTA Finals the very first time she qualified for it, as a 17-year-old in 2004. More than a decade later, she is still seeking to become the 11th multiple-time champion of the event.

Serena Williams, a 5-time queen of the year-end championships, defeated her in the 2012 closing match, gaining revenge for her 2004 final-round loss -- the last time Williams fell to the 6'2" Russian. Sharapova also reached the final in 2007, losing to Justine Henin.
