Recently, an island in Alderney that has been under study for years since the end of World War II was discovered to have details of a Nazi concentration camp. It was believed by many historians and experts that the site was used by Hitler and his soldiers when they were conducting atrocious acts against their prisoners and captives.

Where Alderney is located

Alderney was known to be the home and place of the only British concentration camps during World War II. The site holds many remains and evidence of the war and it showed in more than 30 structures. Many archaeologists have revealed these remains using ground-penetrating radars in the most known menace, which is located in Sylt.

The site's map

Although Alderney has been one of the studied sites by archaeologists and historians, there have been new finds that are discovered just recently. One of these discoveries is the death camp. A death camp was recently found and mapped in the site and was believed to have existed even during the war. The death camp was believed to be run by Schutzstaffel in 1943. The site showed a tunnel from the bathhouse where soldiers used to clean themselves down below the barbed wire fence, and into a nearby village outside the camp.

The tunnel was used to be the way for soldiers and commanders to pass through from the death camp to the villa of the camp's Commandant. According to the discovered remains, the passage was well-lit and was always used by German occupiers

However, aside from that, historians and archaeologists are still unsure why the tunnel was made since soldiers can freely march in and out of the death camp. Some experts believed that the tunnel was made for German soldiers to sneak women in and out for prostitution.

Some of the new discoveries and findings also showed remains of Schutzstaffel buildings, such as kitchens, toilets, bathhouses, and barracks, as well as perimeter fences around the camp and gateposts.

The death camp today

Many of the death camp structures are still physically visible today, such as horse troughs and Schutzstaffel's office where it was built by slaves who are forced to be in labour. However, according to researchers, they are looking for hidden signs of the place during the Nazi era.

In 1944, when it was already clear to many that the Allied forces will win the war, many of the German occupiers in the land have destroyed remains and evidence of the death camp and its monstrous sites.

The researchers also revealed that they have been using non-meddlesome methods in looking for evidence of the death camp and they were able to determine and track the features of the camp that were most prominent. They also discovered how big the camp is back in the day, from where it started as a small forced labour camp to a huge, full-pledged Nazi death camp led by Schutzstaffel dictator.

Overall, there are 32 discovered sites and parts if the death camp made by researchers, archaeologists and historians who have been focusing on this death camp research. The discoveries include four boundaries and five structures for Schutzstaffel soldiers, 21 building for prisoners, and two buildings for the Commandant.
