The Obama administration’s decision Tuesday to try and protect the greater sage grouse without listing it as an endangered species was strongly praised by some environmental groups and roundly condemned by others.
Interior Department Secretary Sally Jewell announced the decision in Commerce City, Colo., near Denver, saying the chicken-like grouse does not meet the required standard because a collaboration of federal agencies, states, ranchers, industry and environmental groups has already begun to restore areas where it breeds.
