MORONGO BASIN — Cases of valley fever are trending downward in San Bernardino County, where the lung disease is not as common as in other parts of the state, the county Health Department reported.
Valley fever is a lung disease that cannot be transmitted from person to person, but comes from inhaling spores of a fungus that lives in dirt. When the earth is disturbed due to construction, agriculture or natural causes, the spores can become airborne. Those who work outdoors are at higher risk for exposure, but anyone living, working or traveling in areas where the spores are present could be affected.
